Fire Safety Starts with Regular Inspections
Fire extinguishers are your first line of defense in the event of a fire. But if they’re not properly maintained, they might not work when you need them most. That’s why NFPA 10 (National Fire Protection Association) sets strict guidelines for fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance intervals.
At Fire Protection Technologies, we help Vermont businesses stay compliant and protected with on-site inspections, tagging, and maintenance.
🔍 1. Monthly Visual Inspection (By Owner or Staff)
Every 30 days, extinguishers must be checked to ensure:
The extinguisher is in its designated location
The pressure gauge is in the operable range
Safety seals and tamper indicators are intact
There is no physical damage, corrosion, or blockage
These quick visual checks can be performed by any responsible staff member.Record the inspection date and initials on the tag or in your log.
🧯 2. Annual Inspection (By a Certified Technician)
Once per year, extinguishers must be professionally inspected by a licensed technician.During this service, we:
Verify mechanical parts and seals
Inspect the hose, nozzle, and safety pin
Check the weight and pressure
Confirm NFPA compliance and apply certification tags
This inspection ensures your equipment is ready for operation and meets insurance and fire marshal requirements.
🧪 3. Six-Year Maintenance
Stored-pressure extinguishers must undergo internal maintenance every six years. This includes:
Emptying and refilling the extinguisher
Inspecting the inside of the cylinder for corrosion
Replacing O-rings and seals
Verifying the valve assembly
We perform all six-year maintenance at our licensed facility and provide full documentation for your compliance records.
💧 4. Twelve-Year Hydrostatic Testing
Every 12 years, the extinguisher cylinder must be hydrostatically tested. This pressure test confirms the cylinder’s strength and ensures it won’t rupture under use.
We’re certified to perform hydrostatic testing and refill extinguishers for ABC, CO₂, and clean agent systems.
