Stay Ready, Not Reactive
A surprise visit from the Fire Marshal can be stressful — especially if your facility isn’t prepared. But with a proactive plan, you can pass your inspection smoothly and show confidence in your fire protection program.
At Fire Protection Technologies, we’ve helped hundreds of Vermont businesses prepare for, pass, and maintain fire code compliance. Here’s how to make sure your next inspection goes off without a hitch.
🔥 1. Verify Fire Extinguisher Inspection Tags
Inspectors always check extinguisher tags first.Make sure:
Each extinguisher is in its designated location
The inspection tag shows a current date
Pressure gauges read within the green zone
Nothing blocks access (maintain at least 36" clearance)
Outdated or missing tags are the most common cause of failed inspections.
💨 2. Confirm Suppression System Certification
If you have a kitchen hood, server room, or battery enclosure, your suppression system must be inspected every 6 months.Verify that:
The inspection tag is current
Nozzles are clean and aligned
Manual pull stations are unobstructed
Fusible links and detection lines are in good condition
NFPA 17A and NFPA 2001 require semiannual service for most systems.
🚪 3. Check Exit Signs and Emergency Lighting
All exits must be clearly marked, illuminated, and unobstructed.Test emergency lights by pressing the test button — each light should stay on for at least 30 seconds.
A failed emergency light battery is a simple but costly citation.
🧯 4. Maintain Documentation
Fire Marshals often request:
Annual fire extinguisher inspection reports
Suppression system test certificates
Fire alarm and sprinkler inspection records
Employee training documentation
Keep all paperwork in an accessible binder or digital folder labeled “Fire Safety Records.”
⚙️ 5. Conduct an Internal Fire Safety Walkthrough
Before the inspection, walk your facility with your maintenance or safety team:
Look for blocked exits, storage near sprinklers, or damaged cords
Ensure fire doors close automatically
Confirm all extinguishers are visible and mounted properly
✅ Bonus Tip: Schedule a Pre-Inspection
We offer pre-inspection services to identify and correct potential violations before the Fire Marshal arrives.
It’s a fast, affordable way to avoid surprise citations and stay compliant.
